TRAINING CAMP REPORT: DAY 1
BCLions.com Staff
75 players hit the field today for day 1 of the BC Lions 2014 Training Camp against the backdrop of the mountains in Kamloops, BC. Mother nature proved to be a formidable foe as the sky clouded over and gusting winds and freezing rain pelted the players, adding a level of unpredictability to plays.
Despite the weather, head coach Mike Benevides took his team through a heavy two-and-a-half hour practice that started with a QB exchange and featured a 30-minute team play with a number of standouts.
Defense:
Brandon McDonald finished the day with two interceptions in team and no huddle. Defensive coordinator Mark Washington was extremely impressed with Brandon Jordan and Kalif Mitchell’s strong performances, while Ryan Phillips’ speed off the snap was on display in team play. The D-line will look to tighten execution and spacing in zone coverage for next practice.
Offense:
Coach Benevides was extremely impressed with the offense today. Of note, R.J. Webb made a spectacular grab off a high pass in skelly, while Andrew Harris broke off during outside run. offensive coordinator Khari Jones was impressed with Kevin Glenn’s ability to step in for Travis Lulay, who took limited reps, stating, “he looked like the veteran he is.”
Travis Lulay:
A big story going in to today’s practice was the status of Lulay who had shoulder surgery in the offseason. Lulay took limited team reps but took about 60 throws through practice.. Said the six-year vet, “it felt good to get out there. We’re laying a foundation for where we want to go.”
Quotes of Note:
Coach Benevides on first-year lions: “The young guys, the tempo is different now with the veterans, and they stood up and they competed.”
Offensive coordinator Khari Jones on R.J. Webb: “From rookie camp, everyday he’s grown a little bit more.”
