Day 2 of the BC Lions 2014 Training Camp kicked off with an early-morning, non-contact practice at 9:30 am under the clear blue skies in Kamloops, BC to concentrate on technique and fundamentals.
The players broke for lunch at 11:00 and then it was back to the field at 3:30 for another two-and-a-half-hour run, alternating between skelly, team, and no-huddle drills. Head coach Mike Benevides stressed in his post-practice address to the players that he was impressed at how quickly the team had come together.
Of note for Day 2:
Defense:
The defense was running strong today. Josh Johnson had several pass break-ups during skelly and had two huge hits during inside play, while Khalif Mitchell impressed with his constant pressure on the QB during team. Meanwhile, Matt McGarva is making a name for himself as a leader in the back end.
Offense:
Shawn Gore stood out for the offense today. The veteran wide receiver broke two tackles in the no-huddle drill and made a low catch through tough traffic. Ernest Jackson and Courtney Taylor both looked strong, as Jackson made several spectacular high catches and Taylor struck for a big gain after hauling in a Kevin Glenn offering on a “seam” route in team play.
First-year Lions:
First-year Leos are wasting no time settling in with the vets. T.J. Lee had a strong showing today, maintaining close coverage at the halfback position. Said guest coach Willie Pile, “he looked comfortable, and we need guys that are versatile like that.”
Quotes of Note:
Receivers coach Joe Paopao on the Lions’ progress: “I’m impressed. It’s only our second day with the main group, but I saw a lot of positives.”
Watching:
Jarrell Root (foot), Hunter Steward (knee), and Brian Burnham (upper body) did not participate today.
