With Day 4 of the BC Lions Training Camp all wrapped up and the end of week one drawing near, this year’s crop of Leos is starting to look like serious contenders. There were two practices on the docket today, with the non-contact morning drill focusing on fundamentals and walk through/testing.
The afternoon session was full-speed as the players hit the field for two hours of alternate no-huddle, team, and one-on-one drills. Head coach Mike Benevides stressed the importance of controlling the ball to the offense in his post-practice address, but also praised the defense for forcing plays to the outside and maintaing strong zone coverage throughout practice.
A few standouts for the day:
Offense:
Korey Williams was fierce on the field today, breaking tackles and making the defense work overtime with his speed and agility. He made multiple hard catches through grueling defensive coverage. Courtney Taylor and Emmanuel Arceneaux also had substantialshowings today, with each garnering a sure touchdown during the team drill. Williams gained his on a high catch through defenders, and Arceneaux on a run-play, beating the coverage on the outside.
Defense:
Hardy-Tuliau continues to make an imprint in practice, with strong coverage man-to-man and quick speed off the snap. He finished the day with a pass breakup and an interception. Korey Jones was consistent in the outside linebacker position, and held the play to the outside during the no-huddle and team drills. Cam Chism also finished the day with an interception.
John Beck:
The ex-NFLer had his strongest practice of camp today. He is settling in to the position and displaying comfortability with the change from NFL to CFL. He quick-decision making was tested today when the defense rushed him in two seperate team drills; he scrambled and completed both passes for sure first downs. Beck also showed his scrambling ability, running the ball in on a run-play during a no-huddle drill.
For the final, and arguably best, play of practice, Beck connected with Shawn Gore on 30-yard pass for another sure touchdown.
….Oh, and did you know he can Dougie with the best of them?
Watching:
Jarell Root (foot), Guillaume Bourassa (hamstring), and Hunter Steward (knee) did not participate today.
