Week one is winding down here at the BC Lions Training Camp, and Day 5 proved to be another big day on the field for the Leos with another two-a-day on the books.
The morning session again focused on fundamentals and teach/test periods, while the evening practice was a high-intensity, two-hour drill focusing mostly on no-huddle, team and red-zone situations. As the Lions get further into camp, head coach Mike Benevides has turned his focus towards game-specific situations that require his team to think on the run despite numerous distractions such as loud music.
Of note for Day 5:
Defence:
The defence was again a strong unit in practice, at times owning the line of scrimmage and bringing plenty of heat to the QB
during multiple no-huddle and team periods, while the secondary provided plenty of support in the backend. Khreem Smith and Eric Taylor stood out for the defensive line with Smith consistently making plays from his rush-end spot, showing the elusiveness that made him a pivotal part of the Lions’ defense last season, while Taylor continues to demonstrate quiet yet significant leadership among his fellow linemen from his inside tackle spot.
Adam Bighill and Jamal Johnson stood out among linebackers, displaying good instincts and ability to read the play, while Casey Chin impressed with his aggressiveness and ability to play close to the ball. Jason Arakgi had arguably the biggest hit of camp, reading the offence on an attempted screen pass and taking down Bryan Burnham.
Offence:
Tim Brown was strong today in practice, finding a gap for a scrambling Beck twice in one no-huddle and breaking through the
defense for a long gain on another stellar carry. Receiver Marco Ianuzzi hauled in a high toss in team period, skying over two defenders while Andrew Harris and Stefan Logan continue to show the vision and speed that make the veteran running backs integral pieces of the Lions’ offensive corps.
With the Lions suffering a number of injuries to offensive linemen, newcomers Garrett Chisolm and Rico Forbes stood out for the big men in the trenches today, each playing every snap. “That’s incredibly hard to do. They played hard ; they played with intensity,” said line coach Dan Dorazio.
