Day 6 is in the bag, and we capped off an excellent Week 1 with a little Friday Night Lights. The boys hit the field at seven for a night practice in front of a an excited gathering of Lions‘ supporters who took advantage of the later practice to see their team in action.
Head coach Mike Benevides led the Leos through a solid two-hour practice including the first full-contact scrimmage of the camp; the quarterback can be hit here. Our QB foursome’s scrambling abilities and quick thinking were tested as the defense wasted no time hitting the offensive line hard.
Offence:
Rookie QB Travis Partridge showed confidence and intelligence in the pocket, scrambling on several plays in the scrimmage period to connect with his receiver.
Whitman Tomusiak is surprising everybody, even offensive coordinator Khari Jones. The receiver has an ability to outrun his coverage, and his speed off the snap catches defenders off guard. He was three for four in the first period of scrimmage today.
Tim Brown had an excellent showing during the scrimmage period, taking off through the defense for a long pass and darting through the slot on a pass-off from Travis Partridge for a likely touch down. “His strength and speed will be pivotal on special teams. “He’s picking up what we’re trying to do,” said Jones. “Everyday I’m seeing him do something that excites me.”
Defence:
Let’s talk about Dyrell “Porkchop” Porcha for a minute here. The rookie defensive lineman made a fantastic play during scrimmage, recovering a fumble after Travis Partridge was sacked for a 20-yard return, which elicited a stream of “there you go Porkchop!” from the sidelines.
Josh Johnson went up against the big boys for his highlight of the night. The rookie defensive back stripped veteran running back Andrew Harris on a screen pass. “He’s always around the ball. He’s a play maker,” said defensive coordinator Mark Washington.
Alex Hoffman-Ellis also stood out among the defense today with an interception in the scrimmage period.
Quotes of Note:
Khari Jones on Whitman Tomusiak: “He impresses me each and everyday. He’s always trying new things, and man he’s fast.”
