Week 1 has officially come to and end here at at BC Lions Training Camp, and with the players looking forward to tomorrow’s festivities at Fan Fest, practice was a bit of a gear down from yesterday’s full-contact run.
Today was another double header for the Lions, with the morning practice focusing on walk throughs and teaching. The night session was a solid two hours, alternating between shorter periods of team, no-huddle, and one-on-one.
The weather has finally decided to cooperate, making for easier practice conditions, after the first few days of heavy winds and hard, freezing rain pelted the players and fans.
Of note for Day 7:
Defense:
Khreem Smith stood out in match ups during the one-on-one periods today, breaking the line of scrimmage and getting past the coverage, while Chris Wilson made an excellent play in one of the team periods, breaking through and rushing the quarterback.
Alex Hoffman-Ellis picked up his second interception in as many days, maintaing close coverage in man-on-man and picking off a high pass, and Brandon McDonald displayed keen zone coverage abilities in one of the no-huddle periods, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball and giving the defense plenty of time to make a play.
Offense:
The offense would exact their revenge though, with a decided advantage in the team periods of practice. The big offensive line made plenty of room for Andrew Harris, Stefan Logan, and Tim Brown to maneuver during rushing plays, and the receivers took full advantage of the open routes, using their speed to dart between defenders and gain yards.
T-Dre Player has been huge for the offensive line, as several injuries have kept players out of practice. The rookie offensive guard has impressed with his hard play, taking the majority of snaps.
Finally, Jabin Sambrano had the catch of the day, vaulting high and out to nab a long pass from a scrambling Beck and tumbling into the end zone for a sure touchdown in the last team period of practice.
Quotes of Note:
Mike Benevides in his post-practice speech: “When you feel the pressure and the world’s coming behind you, that’s when you have to work; you have to persevere”
