The BC Lions Football Club enjoyed a busy and productive evening at the 2014 CFL Draft table picking up seven future Leos and also acquiring quarterback Kevin Glenn form the Ottawa REDBLACKS.
“The most important position on the field is quarterback,” said head coach Mike Benevides. “Having a player of Kevin’s experience joining our team is probably the best news of the day.”
After the dust settled on an active first round the Leos picked up offensive lineman T-Dre Player from Northwestern State with their first selection of the second round (12th overall) and then followed that up by selecting Laval fullback Pascal Lochard with an additional second-round pick (14th overall).
“T-Dre has a unique blend of both size and athletic ability,” noted Benevides of the 6’ 6” guard. “He graded-out very high with his coaches each week, he was a tireless worker in the weight room as well as the classroom so you know he’s going to come in ready to compete.”
“Pascal is similar to Rolly Lumbala; great blocking skills and special teams warrior.”
In the third round, the Lions acquired local linebacker Casey Chin out of Simon Fraser with the 27th overall selection.
“I’m not sure who is more thrilled with this pick, us or Casey,” admits the third year head coach. “He is absolutely over the moon to be a part of our organization and we are very grateful to give him an opportunity to try and make this team. He’s a playmaker, he has a nose for the ball and he’ll be fun to watch in camp.”
The club stayed with the defence with their fourth-round selection snagging lineman David Menard out of the University of Montreal with the 32nd overall selection.
“David is a very athletic football player who comes from a very good program in Montreal. He’s the kind of guy we were looking for as a back-up to Jabar Westerman and Jermain Reid. He’s physical and he has an engine so I look forward to seeing how he develops.”
In the fifth-round (41st overall), the Lions drafted receiver Alexander Fox out of Bishop’s University before taking defensive lineman Dylan Roper out of Simon Fraser with the 50th overall selection and rounding out the 2014 CFL Draft by taking Laval running back Guillaume Bourassa with the 59th overall selection..
“Alexander, Dylan and Guillaume are all high-energy guys who will definitely surprise some people next month in camp,” said Benevides.
First-year Lions will be hit the field in Kamloops, BC beginning Thursday, May 29 before the full squad begins training camp on Sunday, June 1.
