With a 28 to 23 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers this evening the BC Lions Football Club has punched their ticket to the 2014 CFL postseason. The win puts the Leos in the playoffs for the 18th consecutive season equaling Montreal’s current streak which is also the second longest in CFL history.
The Lions now sit in a third-place tie with the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the West Division with a game in hand. The club also has the tie-breaker over the ‘Riders based on point differential in their two games earlier this season. The Lions sit four points back of Edmonton for second spot and will face the Eskimos next week in a key road tilt.
“There is a lot still to be decided,” said head coach Mike Benevides. “As a team, we’re pleased with the outcome of tonight’s game, we’re excited to be in the playoffs, but we know there is a ton of work to be put in and we need to continue to improve as a team to meet the tremendous challenges that lie ahead.”
Depending on the outcomes of both their own and other West Division games over the final two weeks of the season, the Lions can finish anywhere from fourth to second place. In order to host the Western Semi-Final the Lions must win their final two regular season games over Edmonton and Calgary including a margin of victory of at least eight points over the Eskimos next week. The Lions would then need loss by the Green and Gold in their final regular season tilt in Saskatchewan.
If the Lions win their final two games and the Eskimos defeat Saskatchewan in the final week of regular season action, the Lions will travel to Edmonton on November 16 for the Western Semi-Final. If the Lions drop their two remaining games and Saskatchewan defeats Edmonton in the final week of the season, the Lions will be the East Division crossover team.
