The BC Lions Football Club announced this morning that international defensive back Ronnie Yell has signed a contract extension through the 2016 season.

Yell enjoyed a remarkable debut for the Lions in 2014 starting 16 regular season games notching 39 defensive tackles and two interceptions, both of which he returned for touchdowns as well as three pass knockdowns, two forced fumbles and six stops on special teams.

The San Jose State grad originally joined the Lions in 2013 as a late addition to the club’s practice roster, but quickly gained a starting spot coming out of training camp this past year.

His penchant for big plays earned the California native CFL Player of the Week honours following the Lions win over Calgary last August, as he struck for his first pro interception which he took 34 yards for a major and then sealed the win with a forced fumble with the Stampeders on the march in the game’s final moments.
