The BC Lions Football Club is pleased to announce that VP of Football Operations and GM Wally Buono has been appointed to the Order of Canada as a member (C.M.). Govenor General David Johnson made the announcement at Rideau Hall Friday of 95 new appointees.
“To receive this honour is both humbling and exciting. I’ve never been more proud to be a Canadian,” said Buono.
The Order of Canada is the country’s highest civilian honour, recognizing outstanding achievement, dedication to the community, and service to the nation and is recognized as the cornerstone of the Canadian Honours System. The former Lions coach is being recognized at the member level for his contribution to regional and local service.
Along with this most-recent accolade, Wally was also inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in the Builder catergory earlier this year in recognition of his contribution as a coach and GM.
In his 12th year as Lions general manager, the CFL’s all-time winningest coach continued his dedicated work with the Royal Columbian Hospital Association and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Among his other charitable efforts, Wally is actively involved with Operation Christmas Child, which proides presents to children in impoverished nations, and he works closely with the ALS Society of BC’s WALK for ALS.
