BC Lions players Dean Valli, Shawn Gore, Emmanuel Arceneaux, Courtney Taylor, Jason Arakgi, Rolly Lumbala, Ronnie Yell, Josh Johnson, Andre Ramsey, T-Dre Player and Casey Chin will be visiting more than a dozen communities around BC in support of the Fortis Energy Champions, Lions in the House, Be More Than A Bystander, Lions Pride and Read, Write and Roar programs.
Now entering its fifth season, the FortisBC Energy Champions program is designed specifically for children in kindergarten through grade seven, emphasizing the importance of environmental responsibility and being an ‘Energy Champion.’ In 2014, the initiative saw the club visit 75 elementary schools throughout British Columbia, inspiring more than 22,000 students to play an active role in reducing their environmental footprint.
Launched in 2011, Be More Than a Bystander breaks the silence surrounding violence against women and girls by providing tools, language and practical ideas about how to be more than a bystander, how to speak up and how to communicate that violence and abuse is not acceptable.
The Be More Than a Bystander program is made possible with the generous support of Founding Partners: The Government of Canada, BC Ministry of Children and Family Development, the Ending Violence Association of British Columbia and Encana Corporation; Supporting Partner: BC Federation of Labour and Municipal Partners: City of Vancouver and City of Surrey.
Launched in 2013 and presented by the Province of British Columbia along with Coast Capital Savings, Lions Pride is a ground-breaking outreach program designed for young people in grades eight through 12 highlighting the importance of making positive life choices and avoiding gang involvement. In addition to sharing their own experiences in the area of decision-making, select Lions also act as coaches in a four-team flag football league for at-risk youth with practices slated for this coming April. The program culminates in a flag tournament in May at the club’s practice facility.
Read, Write and Roar takes Lions players into 14 school districts in 2015 and in front of more than 20,000 students to stress the importance of literacy through a fun and captivating journal. Read, Write and Roar is proudly supported by Pacific NorthWest LNG, Ricoh & Industrial Alliance.
