You could say newcomer Chris Rainey is making quite the splash on the BC Lions so far. In just his third game, Rainey romped and rumbled his way into the end zone twice Friday at McMahon stadium, finishing the night with a staggering 333 return yards, a new BC Lions record and the fourth largest in CFL history! It’s not unheard of for CFL players to score twice, or even nab the hat trick, but what makes Rainey’s feat remarkable was that both TDs came off kick returns.
Rainey opened the second half by returning Calgary’s kickoff for 102 yards to the house, putting the BC Lions right back in the game. He followed that up early in the fourth quarter by running back a 47-yard Calgary punt 103 yards to score. The Lions would tie the game 21-21 after hitting the 2-point convert.
“He’s a baller,” said Andrew Harris of Rainey. “Not only does he have the speed, he’s breaking blocks, making people miss.” Since being picked up by the Lions during their bye week, Rainey has impressed fans with his speed and agility on kick returns, and he may just be the spark the Lions need in their return game.
What makes Rainey’s Friday-night show so impressive is that both returns were for 100+ yards and came on a kickoff and a punt. Only four player have returned a kickoff and punt for TDs in the same game with Rainey’s being the longest combined yardage.
