The MOP Returns

After young Kaidon Salter turned heads with his heroics on the ground last week, Nathan Rourke returns after essentially missing three full games with his left shoulder injury, which has now healed. He admitted this week that, had it been his throwing side, he likely would have been in trouble as far as a 2026 return. During his absence, the football junky remained very engaged at practice, in meetings and in game action while on the shelf. And as this Lions squad eyes a similar second-half-of-the-season turnaround to the one they pulled off in 2025, they will go as far as Rourke takes them and will certainly benefit from being more active in the pass game. Rourke has completed 71.3 of his throws (107/150), while recording 1,403 yards and five touchdowns against four interceptions through the air. Entering this week, the Tiger-Cats are allowing only 279.3 passing yards per game, second-fewest in the CFL.

Unleashing The Beasts

On the topic of stretching the field, a product of winning last week despite only seven completions meant the usual suspects at receiver had relatively quiet outings. Keon Hatcher Sr. only had one reception, albeit a big one, while Justin McInnis was held off the stat sheet after only being targeted once. The Lions are also expected to have Jevon Cottoy back after missing six weeks. With all hands on deck in the passing game, we should hopefully start to see what this offence can really be made of. McInnis is surely due for a breakout. With 193 of his 323 yards coming in one performance at Saskatchewan in week two and no touchdowns yet this season, it will be a bonus to have him back as a gamebreaker for number 12.

More Tweaks On Improved D

The improved play on defence has been more noteworthy when you consider how many injuries they’ve dealt with through the first third of the season.  T.J. Lee is back in the lineup after missing one game with his latest injury. The defensive line gets a boost with the return of Levi Bell, who should make a nice tandem with Lorenzo Mauldin IV at the end position. After Jonah Tavai left the Winnipeg game with an injured calf, rookie David Gusta makes his CFL debut in the interior. A big body who impressed throughout training camp, Gusta will be counted upon to plug the run game and cause havoc in the trenches. The more pressure they bring, the better the entire defensive unit has performed. They enter this week best in the CFL at opposing rushing yards per game (65.4) and opposing yards per carry (3.8 yards). After he relieved Tre Ford last week, Harrison Frost will make his first start at quarterback for the Tiger-Cats.

Home Cookin’

Another major key for a big turnaround to the season will be the home-field advantage factor. With six of their remaining 11 contests at BC Place, that time is now to make it a fortress. They also look to snap a three-game home losing streak to the Tiger-Cats, with their last successful outing coming in Rourke’s first season as the full-time starter in 2022. The remaining home slate includes a pair of visits from Saskatchewan on August 23 and September 25, plus a potentially massive regular season finale against Winnipeg on October 23. One game at a time. Taking down Hamilton will be another gigantic step in the process.

What They’re Saying

“I think you’re able to kind of take a different vantage point. To be honest, I stayed in it as much as I could; I tried to prepare every single week like I was playing, trying to keep my mental side sharp, knowing that I would come back and not done for the rest of the year. I more or less tried to make sure I was taking reps and tried to evaluate myself that way. I tried to make the most of it. I got the chance to watch some talented quarterbacks in front of me. Again, I’m choosing to look at it as a positive, but I’m excited to get back out there with the boys.”- Rourke on how he approached the last two weeks.

“Kenny Lawler and  (Larry) Rountree, the running backs, are really explosive. They’ve got good players, for sure. They always have more of a creative offence. They’re a little bit different than some teams in the CFL. Of course, we know they kind of flipped-flopped their quarterback last game. But anybody they give us, they believe is going to give them the best chance to win. Regardless of the team we’re playing, we’ll face good players, good quarterbacks, good coordinators. Just go out there and stay true to what we’re doing is how we’ll have success.”- Mathieu Betts on the challenges facing Hamilton’s offence.

Extra Points

Saturday marks the 106th all-time regular season meeting between the Lions and Tiger-Cats. BC holds the edge with a record of 59-43-3 overall and 32-18-3 in games played at home. In 16 meetings dating back to July 2017, Frost will represent the seventh quarterback the Lions face in this matchup. In order: Zach Collaros, Jeremiah Masoli, Dane Evans, Taylor Powell and Bo Levi Mitchell.

As per Lions historian and CFL stats man Steve Daniel, a closer look at how much the defence has improved over the last three games:

Games #1-4: 50 opposition drives, 16 touchdowns allowed (32.0% TD Rate). Games #5-7: 42 opposition drives, four touchdowns allowed (9.5% TD Rate).

CFL sack leader Mathieu Betts has recorded at least one in each of his last three games. His personal best streak is six games. Look for him to try to make Frost uncomfortable from the get-go.

James Butler returns as the starting tailback after a foot injury kept him out last week. The 1/2 punch with Zander Horvath will be a fun storyline to watch. Over his two career starts, Horvath had 152 yards on 12 carries in a big win at Calgary in 2025 and then there was his monster performance last week with 191 yards on 17 carries. Much of that damage has come in the fourth quarter in both outings.
